This photo, taken by Alex MacLean, entitled Coal Dust Suppression was shot in Newport, Virginia in 2011. MacLean took this photo from above, looking down over his subject. The photograph appears to be asymmetrically balanced, also meeting the rule of thirds with the tower being at an intersection of third lines and the red bars form a line that almost cuts the top of the image into a third. I believe that there is a clear focal point where the colorful dust shows in the middle top of the photo. The rainbow color against the black ground makes this part of the image stand out and become the main subject of the photo. The photograph is horizontal which gives a good look at the set up of the landscape in which this photo was taken. I think that there was some foreground, middle ground and background set up by the framing of the image. Although the photo is taken from a high point of view, when you look at the photo you still see that the blue bars being behind the red ones and in the far background you can see what appears to be water or something different than the dusty earth in the foreground and middle ground. I also think that the photo effectively leads your eye through the photo by all the different entrances of the bars that all connect and lead your way through all different parts of the photo, including the rainbow dust and the box at the top left of the photo.
